Introduction to CMM

Methodology -

A Prerequisite to

Coordinate Measuring Machine

Training

This video training series will guide you through the fundamentals of CMM measurement. It defines in detail the base information that is required when starting a career in metrology. This is information that is impossible to build into typical training courses, which are designed to teach delegates how to operate specific CMM software rather than focusing on the principles of measurement.

With five and a half hours of animated video the course takes you through how the different types of CMM and PCMM machines work and the basics of feature measurement. You will also learn about basic alignment principles before moving on to complex best-fit alignments and then the essentials of both programming and reporting. The course then concludes with three examples and frequently asked questions. All of this is delivered with no specific software bias so you learn how to measure, not how to use specific software.

Aimed at the beginner CMM Methodology - A Prerequisite to Coordinate Measuring Machine training is a great resource for the novice operator. It's also a repository for experienced programmers faced with a new measurement challenge or problem. The course will also prove invaluable for anybody who comes into contact with CMM, such as manufacturing and design engineers, helping them to understand the complexities of 3D measurement.

With all this new knowledge it will enable you to get the most out of a software-specific training course by allowing you to concentrate on how the software works and not how to measure. It will also help to level out the steep learning curve of operating and programming a CMM.

Section 1

With 5 lessons Section 1 introduces you to the basic tools and background information required when learning the fundamentals of 3D Metrology. The tools you’ll need before completing your first measurements.

Section 2

Section 2 discusses the principles of alignment, which is an essential part CMM measurement. It starts with the basic principles and then moves on to more advanced methods. The many different types of alignment available are also discussed.

Section 3

Section 3 discusses several important factors, including holding the component and selecting a datum system. Reporting, automation and the use of CAD models to assist with offline programming are also discussed.

Section 4

The fourth and final section puts all the skills that you have learned into practice with three working examples before answering some commonly asked questions by new programmers.

An overview of the training objectives

This introduction video discusses the learning objectives of the CMM Methodology training course. It also discusses what you can expect to learn from the videos, in addition to what they will not teach you.
